Having problems with your 2001 Dodge Intrepid ?

The check engine light keeps coming on. we put a quart of oil in and the light went off but several hours later while driving on the high way at about 55 mph the car gave a jolt and the check engine light came back on. What could be the problem with this car we have only had it for 2 weeks and it has about 79000 miles on it.

Answers :

The check engine light has nothing to do with the oil level. The "Check Engine" light is the same as other cars which use a "Service Engine Soon" light. It indicates that the computer has logged an error code for one of its monitored/controlled sub-systems.You will need to retrieve the code(s) to begin diagnosis. This is done with either a code reader or a scanner. You need not pay for this. Many auto parts stores will pull the code for you at no cost. I know for certain that Autozone does this and I think (but don't know with certainty) that O'Reilley's does too. Note: a logged code does not necessarily mean that a component related to that code is bad. Do NOT purchase replacement parts on the advice of a parts sales person at the auto parts store. Very few of these people have ever worked professionally as an automotive tech and they generally don't know diddly about the real workings of a car. Post the codes back here for assistance in troubleshooting your problem.
