Have your heater core checked out. If it is blocked with all kinds of junk it fails, and the car over heats. Also when you were warming up your car did you have the heater on? If you did and it smelled like burnt maple syrup there ya go. They don't always have to leak to fail, and cause coolant supply cut off to the engine block. But be informed if it is it will be a pain to remove and repair.
Sounds like you may have a thermostat that is failing or your engine may have had a temporary vapor lock. First of all check your coolant level if that seems fine replace your thermostat. As far as being on high until you shut your heater off is probably just coincidence because when your heater is on it is helping to dissipate the heat from your coolant system.
