Timing marks cant find timing marks on crank or on dual over head cams
On a 2.0L Zetec engine, there are NO timing marks. To time this particular engine when replacing the timing belt, there are two tools to be used. One requires removal of the valve cover. Once removed, the cams need to be rotated to where a flat bar type tool is inserted into offset slots on the rear side of both cams, locking them together and flush with the valve cover gasket surface. The other tool is a peg that threads into a hole in the side of the engine block just below the exhaust manifold, behind the catalytic converter. There is a 10mm head plug that needs to be removed, where the peg is inserted. The engine crankshaft would need to be rotated to where cylinder #1 (and #4 for that matter) is oriented at top dead center. Once this is done, the peg will thread into this hole, and lock the crankshaft into that position. In absence of those tools, you will need to make your own marks on both the cam and crank sprockets, using paint dabs or something similar to reference the positions relative to each other.
The cam should be at 6:00 and the crank at 12:00
