Having problems with your 2001 Ford Escort ZX2 ?

I have a 2001 Ford ZX2-broken timing belt-interference or non? I need to know this because I don't know whether or not I should replace the belt or purchase a new vehicle. The mechanic states it is interference, dealer doesn't know, and I see a lot of talk when I search on google that the car is non-interference. Anyone know the truth? Please help! Not sure if it's interference or not, but even if it is that doesn't mean you have damaged the engine. It is worth a few bucks for a belt if you can do the labor yourself. If you want to try, I can probably send you instructions. Lemme know.
