Airbag code 12 on 1997 ford explorer - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport
Code 12 means the battery was disconnected. the Ford dealer can reset the light and clear this code.
I had this same error code on my Mercury Mountaineer 1998. It turned out to be a blown 10amp fuse under the hood between the battery and the driver on the driver's side. It was fuse number 5 or 6. After replacing the fuse, the error code changed from 12 to 52. 52 means that there was an interruption in power (which happened when the fuse was blown). Unfortunately, error code 52 stays active for a long time. I read one of these forums and they said it stays active for 255 start cycles. Too long.. But I have read elsewhere that the code can be reset by some autoparts stores if they have a good enough diagnostic tool. I'm taking mine to a mechanic that says he'll reset it for $15 bucks. We'll see how that works out..
