Having problems with your 2001 Volkswagen Golf ?

The battery light has just come on for my 2001 vw golf. what does this mean? how do i know if it's the alternator, battery or something else? and how much should a new battery or alternator cost. FYI this is for a UK car

When the light comes on, it is a signal that you are using more electricity than is being produced, below some threshold. If it continues to stay on when you rev the engine, it is probably your alternator. A 9 year old vehicle is a candidate for an alternator replacement, and probably a battery replacement, though you may not need a battery right now. Expect to pay $150.00 or more for the alternator if you are doing the work. Expect to replace your battery for around $125.00 if you are doing the work. I would expect a shop would do this work for about $375.00 depending on where you are located. If you are doing the work, expect to spend 3 hours on this job if you have the right tools, including bandaids.
