This is most likely due to worn valve stem oil seals - this seems to be a common fault with v8 BMW's. Very expensive to fix. I was quoted today a price of $6 - 7,000 plus parts. They said the motor had to be removed from the car, and that I would be better off getting a new motor! And my car has only done 105,000 km.
I don't know much about BMW's, but white smoke...not blue...coming from the exhaust pipe...particularly once its warmed up...sounds like you've got a head gasket going out. A normal operating engine, expands and contracts a fair amount as it reaches standard operating temperature. A warn gasket may no longer expand well enough to fill the void or contract enough when cooled to continue doing its job correctly. If the smoke had a blue tint to it, I would then suspect valve seals allowing oil to seep into the cylinders. Sorry for the bad news, but I do hope this helps in some way. Best of luck!
