I have an older Cherokee Laredo and it does the same thing. On models like ours equipped with on the fly 4WD, the hubs are permanently locked. Whether engaged or not, the front wheels are connected to the rest of the drive train though U-Joints which are spinning with the wheels. On a hard turn, they can come close to binding. That's what you're feeling.

Go easy on the bat-turns. If you can't, make sure they're lubed good.
