Computer brains, 101
\012no computer , for sure not these tiny MICROS, are not intelligent.
\012it sets up a test, takes a measurement and reports it.
\012the OP gave no driving symptoms, nor if this is the only DTC stored, nor if it goes way , after reset and drove.
\012
\012the SENSORS errors, vss can be in many froms
\012dead,
\012slow,
\012or intermittant.
\012if slow, this can be a slipping transmission (clutch packs bad , line pressure low)
\012
\012he 42RE (4.0L I6) only has an output sensor. The 45/545RFE (4.7L V8) has both input and output sensors.
\012
\012the fsm shows 2 720 (one called error and other low)
\012ill post the page (its very clear)
\012P0720-LOW OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR RPM, ABOVE 15 MPH
\012
\012WHEN MONITORED
\012Continuously with the key on, engine running, and gear selector NOT in park or neutral.
\012
\012SET CONDITION
\012This code will set if the vehicle speed (from the CAB module) is above 15 MPH , and the Output Shaft Speed sensor is below 60 RPM for 2.6 seconds . (too slow)!
\012
\012POSSIBLE CAUSES
\012
    \012\011
  • Check for park neutral codes
  • \012\011
  • Intermittent output speed sensor
  • \012\011
  • Output speed sensor defective
  • \012\011
  • Output speed sensor (+) open
  • \012\011
  • Output speed sensor (-) open
  • \012\011
  • Output speed sensor (+) short to ground
  • \012\011
  • Output speed sensor (-) shorted to ground
  • \012\011
  • Output speed sensor (+) shorted to voltage
  • \012\011
  • Output speed sensor (-) shorted to voltage
  • \012\011
  • PCM defective
  • \012
\012\012\011note how they forgot to say, transmissions can in fact slip.
\012\011odd huh?
\012\011most folks replace the sensor
\012\011(never dealer, he reads both data )
\012\011the dealer can read prop shaft speeds and vss to see if they match. oh, my the trans slips.
\012\011the sensor is cheap. by one try it.
\012\011
Code p0720 refers to output shaft speed sensor(OSS)--circuit malfunction====causes--wiring--OSS sensor--ECM/TCM
\012of it has just happened check the wiring and connections to the transmission for water and corrosion or replace the OSS sensor in the transmission.
