Having problems with your 2002 Jeep Wrangler ?

When you turn the key the engine won't start, battery is good and starter is brand new and is getting power.

When you turn the key to the position the Jeep would normally run all the normal stuff should come on. It will most likely have a check engine light, oil pressure low light ect that will be on as well. The starter needs a good ground source to operate propperly as well as a good connection to the big wire that comes off of the battery.
\015\012There is also a smallish wire that goes to the starter that is near the big wire. It most likely has a small boot over it to protect it from the elemnts and such. The starter will just sit and wait until this smallish wire gets power, and then it will enguage.
\015\012The small wire will not get power until you push in the clutch on a standard transmition, or the transmition has to be in neutral or park in an automatic. If the small switch in either model is not making contact, or if the ignition switch by the key is not making contact then this small wire will not get power.
\015\012I would check to see if this is the case first thing. Put a volt meter on the small wire where it connects to the starter, and try to start it. If it does not have 12-14 volts DC at this point then something is wrong with one of these switches.
\015\012If you land another wire in the place where this small wire usually goes and give it power straight from the battery, or from the big wire if you can do this safely, the starter should act normally if this is the problem.
\015\012That should give you a better idea of where the problem lies.

Starters typically have 2 sources of power. First is a constant hot which is the main draw of the starter. This is measurable at all times and is usually a big red wire attached to a starter lug. The second source is the 'trigger' wire which is tied into the ignition system via a starter relay. When you turn the key, your ignition switch routes power to the starter relay which then throws power to the starter solenoid (usually on the starter itself) via the 'trigger' wire (and you could measure 12V on it then). This solenoid will make a loud thunk as it throws the shaft and starter gear to engage the flywheel (or whatever it's called in your vehicle). It also allows the starter to make contact between the coils and the constant hot that I spoke of earlier. Work your way through the diagnostics based on what you hear when you turn the key. click click click... weak battery, bad post connections, failing relay. THunk... bad starter or dirty internal contacts. Nothing... possible failed ignition switch or open starter relay.
