Having problems with your 2002 Mercury Sable ?

My 2002 Mercury Sable ran completly out of gas, put more gas in but now it won't start, tried starter fluid it would fire up but stall right out. The dealer said it sounded like the fuel pump burnt up trying to restart it, has anyone else had this type of problem?

If you ran the tank dry then yes it is a fuel pump and you verified the problem with instant start fluid, you need a fuel pump
Dealers want money.period.you may already have the car running by now,but here goes. you need to have at least 3 gallons of fuel in the tank, try turning the key on for 5seconds,do you hear the hum from under the car? if you do,the fuel pumps trying to get the fuel to your engine.whether it's pumping the correct pressure, you'll find out in just a few short steps.if you hear the humming, cycle your ignition key to the "on" position.leave the key in the "on"posittion for 5 seconds at a time. do not attempt to start the car, just turn the key switch "on" each time for 5 seconds. do this,5 times.have you heard the humming from under the car? if not, then the fuel pump may be bad. after you've cycled the key switch 5 times, try starting the car,if it starts, let it idle for 5 minutes to let the fuel pump catch up. DO NOT REV THE ENGINE. if this does'nt work, check your fuel pump relay under the hood in the main fuse panel, usually located on the driverside fenderwell under the hood. remove the cover and flip the lid upside down to reveal the fuel pump relay location. if the relay is not bad,you can remove the air induction duct and while turning the engine over trying to start and spraying starter fluid gently into the air induction,if it trys to start, then you can say you have a fuel issue. thank you for choosing fixya.com.
