Having problems with your 2004 Chevrolet Impala ?

I have approximately 144,000 miles on my 2004 Impala. I have never changed trans fluid & filter since my purchase of the car, already having 30,000 miles at time of my purchase. Now I'm noticing hard shifts every now and then. My web searches indicate that I SHOULD NOT change trans fluid & filter since I haven't done so during recommended intervals. It says it may do more harm than good. So, now what? Wait till it breaks down?
