If you intend on doing this yourself a gasket replacement makes sense as it would be cheap replacement compared to purchasing manual locks. Inspect the hub and the shaft of that wheel. Check for bad booth, or dirt which may have caused the noise or the damage of the gasket in the first place. Ensure there is good amount of grease. It is true that gaskets get rusty even when new but there may be other factors which may cause this such as decrease in lubrication or bad seals. Check also the linkages and the wiring for the 4x4. Yours may have a velocity sensor on that side which helps control 4x4 motion. It may be bad or connections may have been bad.
