There is no set milage for changing the brakes. It depends on how you stop the car, as well as the quality of the parts. If you slow down gradual, then your brakes can last a very long time.
\015\012With the tires off, it is very easy to see the brake pads through a window in the back of the caliper. About the thickness of 3 pennies is calling it close. Many shops will check them for free, also.
\015\012Once the pads are ready for replacement, the rotors will need to be checked for enough thickness, and if they are still in specs will still need to be resurfaced. This allows the new pads to wear evenly, performing better and lasting longer. I replace them because they are not very expensive. A nice of set pads & rotors for all 4 tires will run around $200 shipped to your door.
\015\012There are a few tricks that may help you if you decide to do the job. Just post it, and I give you some pointers.
\015\012Good Luck!
