I had the same problem.
I strongly suggest a very thorough flush of the cooling system, you probably have a scale build up like me.
In my case I had to do extra direct flushes of the heater core to get all of the junk out of there. Keep flushing until the water runs perfectly clear. I reversed the flow direction many times to be sure. Remember to only use Dexcool in a 50 / 50 mix with purified water when you refill, green coolant is not meant for this cooling system.
If your house water is hard like mine, the purified water will help avoid a resurgence of this type of trouble.
Just as important, carefully inspect and feel your upper and lower radiator hoses for breakdown from the overheated fluids. They should feel firm and not spongy. Replace any that don't feel right so you can get back to not having to touch your cooling system for the standard 150k miles.
During refill, remember to bleed the air from the water pump bleed tap, this is important or you will have a large air bubble in your cooling system that will cause a lot of grief and possible engine damage.
Finally, go to a GM dealer and get the sealer tablet package that is required, yes required for the 3.4L engine that are in the Equinox and Pontiac Torrent. Do not crush the 5 tablets from the package before dropping them into a cold surge tank.
If you do not use these seal tablets, you will notice a smell like maple syrup every time you turn your heater on going forward. That is the heated Dexcool weeping from the coils of your heater core. There are mechanical reasons for using the sealing tablets as well but the maple smell should get you to move that way regardless.
Best of luck!
