P0406 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor A Circuit High

Early Models : The EGR valve control the amount of exhaust gas routed to\012 the intake manifold. Vacuum is applied to the EGR valve in response to \012the throttle opening. The vacuum control the movement of the taper valve\012 connected to the vacuum diaphragm in the EGR valve.

\012Late Models : The EGR volume control valve uses a step motor to control \012the flow rate of EGR from exhaust manifold. This motor has four winding \012phases. It operates according to the output pulse signal of the ECM. Two\012 windings are turned ON and OFF in sequence. Each time an ON pulse is \012issued, the valve opens or closes, changing the flow rate. When no \012change in the flow rate is needed, the ECM does not issue the pulse \012signal. A certain voltage signal is issued so that the valve remains at \012that particular opening.

Symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Engine hesitation

Possible causes
- Harness or connectors (EGR volume control valve circuit is open or shorted.)
- EGR volume control solenoid valve
- EGR temperature sensor and circuit

Possible solution
- Repair EGR harness or connector
- Replaced EGR volume control solenoid valve
- Replaced EGR volume control valve
When is the code detected?
- An improper voltage signal is sent to ECM through the valve

Hope helps.
The code you have is for your Service Engine Soon Light is Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor A Circuit High. Meaning the EGR valve is bad. Sometimes the EGR valve can be cleaned, as it gets clogged up with carbon and doesn't open and close well. For the code you have though, it is more than likely going to need to be replaced.

The EGR valve is located by the front top of the right side cylinder head and valve cover. A pipe comes out of it which runs up along the coils and spark plugs to the back right side of the intake manifold.
