Assuming your A/C is stillblowing cold but over the windscreen only THIS IS PRETTY MUCH A KNOWN PROBLEM. Check on the Ford explorer forum for details but basically boils down to 1 of 2 problems
\015\012a/ Vacuum leak
\015\012b/ broken link into the ducting box.behind the dash.
\015\012You don't need to take the dash out ,Drop out the glove box, (details on the forum )and look for movement of the actuator. or to see if the link is broken. Again search on the forum as there are pictures there of what you're looking at.
\015\012 The forum is free !!! and the fix seems pretty simple with a bit of sheet metal work.
It kinda tough to explain to one what to do especially working behind the dash. The reason why most mechanics want to charge that amount if time consuming were talking about 1-3 hours or more which only cost less 50 buck or less to fix or may not need any part at all. tearing into the dash is one nightmare which every mechanic truly hate and can charge big bucks to work on. most auto repair book don't even offer how to tear into the dash. If you willing to do the work, I would take note what you are taking apart and take picture if need too, if you don't think you can remember what goes where and use ziploc bag to label the screws and bolts. You have to be careful with the air bag in the steering wheel, when disconnecting and reconnecting; the unit can discharge if short the unit. There allot of mechanics are out of work, you may want to advertise on craig list for on and how much you willing to pay, lots of mechanic willing to do side work to to economy and I have seen mechanic advertise for work also on craig list. Paying mechanics doing side job will cost much less than what they going to charge at the main shop, will save you lots of griff and head ache. Or on the next oil change I would chat with one of the mechanic asking him does he know any mechanics that does side work, you be surprised, I have work at many dealer big shop to small shop has them. do this first to see what kind of response and the price that you think its fair and can live with, even though that mechanic may live out of town but most willing even come to you. if you think the repair is something you cant live with, repost your problems and one of us will try to walk you through it.
