Description & Operation

\015\012The Camshaft Position Sensor (CMP) is a variable reluctance sensor that is triggered by a high point on the left-hand exhaust camshaft sprocket. The CMP sends a signal relating camshaft position back to the PCM which is used by the PCM to control engine timing.
\015\012The CMP sensor detects the position of the camshaft. The CMP sensor identifies when piston No. 1 is on its compression stroke. A signal is then sent to the PCM and used for synchronizing the sequential firing of the fuel injectors. Coil-on-plug (COP) ignition applications use the CMP signal to select the proper ignition coil to fire. The input circuit to the PCM is referred to as the CMP input or circuit. DTC P0340 is associated with this sensor.

    \015\012
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section. \015\012 \015\012
  2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. \015\012 \015\012
  3. Remove the pin-type retainers and remove the accelerator cable snow shield. \015\012 \015\012
  4. Detach the spark plug wire retainer. \015\012 \015\012
  5. Detach the wiring harness from the intake manifold support. \015\012 \015\012
  6. Release the fuel charging wiring harness from the valve cover studs. Position the wiring harness away from the camshaft position sensor. \015\012 \015\012
  7. Disconnect the electrical connector. \015\012 \015\012
  8. Remove the screws and the CMP. \015\012 \015\012
  9. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
\015\012\015\012NOTE\015\012Make sure that the fuel charging wiring harness is fully secured to the valve cover studs.

    \015\012
  1. Check voltage between the camshaft position sensor terminals PWR GND and CID. \015\012 \015\012
  2. With engine running, voltage should be greater than 0.1 volt AC and vary with engine speed. \015\012 \015\012
  3. If voltage is not within specification, check for proper voltage at the VPWR terminal. \015\012 \015\012
  4. If VPWR voltage is greater than 10.5 volts, sensor may be faulty. \015\012

    \015\012
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
\015\012\015\012WARNING\015\012Use only a high-impedance multimeter, otherwise damage to the PCM and/or sensors can result.
    \015\012 \015\012
  2. With the key OFF , disconnect the CMP sensor harness connector. \015\012 \015\012
  3. Measure the resistance of the CMP sensor.

    \015\012 \015\012
  4. If the resistance measured is outside the limits given, replace the CMP sensor.
