Welcome to Fixya! Have you tried Replacing that Temp Switch? It sounds like the Computer is shutting down due to Heat Codes sent via the Temp switch. This is a Security Mechanism Built in to the New Vehicles so you will not Blow the Motor.
The temperature Sensor may be bad or there could be a clog somewhere and so the engines internal temp is rising and the car is shutting off. If the Guage is bad, it wont look like its over heating. Check that code you got from the reader and compare it to the manual and see what its actually for.
\015\012Some cars like the 99' Olds Alero made by GM was plagued with heating issues, the problem was a bad designed water pump, The new one had better fins allowing better flow of coolant which solved all the issues once replaced. Three ASE certified mechanics couldnt figure this out over the course of three years. I replaced a $20 water pump and fixed it in 20 minutes. To bad this was after i spent all the money:(
\015\012I would replace the switch first and possibly the the coolant temperature sensor as well as flush the system. All this will cost less than having a mechanic guess at it for weeks and stick you with the bill.
