This is an obvious safety issue and needs to be towed to the dealer for immediate repairs. Have them look at any TSB (technical service bulletins) regarding this issue. This system uses an electric motor on the side of the column as well as hydraulic pressure driven under the hood to give you a very smooth power steering system. It sounds like the rack and pinion may had broken internally. It is not common but not impossible. You may still have a warranty claim. Do not be afraid to check. If you have an owner's handbook, call the number in there and talk to a customer service rep from GM to assist you. They may be able to do what the dealer can't OR wont.
I would definitely have the rack and pinion for the steering checked...you might also want to check the hydraulic lines for leaks.

have a mechanic do these things prbly safer and more in-depth check
