Replacement vacuum pump bearing also fails in 1400 miles

\015 I'd been having a new noise / rattle and was having trouble diagnosing it. While fueling locally, a mechanic at a service garage heard the noise and resolutely said "belt tensioner", no doubt about it. So I took the advice and bought one. While changing it, I noted the pulley below was a bit wobbly - that's the vac pump. I realized what was causing the noise. No vac pump available locally (Framingham MA), so organized to have Autozone in Troy NY to have one. I changed the tensioner anyway and planned to replace the vac pump under some random shade tree in Troy NY.Got to Troy at 2:30 with vac pump hanging in by a thread. The new vac pump arrived and by 6:23 was entoute to Kalamazoo. I had reset the pulley face to be flush with the new pump's shaft end, same as original. In Kzoo, I bought replacement serp belts (both sizes) just in case. Please with queiter operation in Ontario, KZoo, (picked up daughter and all her stuff) Niagra, Syracuse, and Lee MA, checked under the hood each time. Drove 1400 miles over 48 hours.Passing through the tolls near home I heard new noise, like grinding metal... kept gopinf the last 3 miles. It was the vac pump bearing having failed and the pulley griding on the the vac pump's belt shield.Between 1400 and 1500 miles the pulley had started hitting the belt guard\015\012(comes on the new vac pump) and I heard the racket in the toll booth. \015\012Finished the trip with 4 miles of driving white knuckled to the\015\012destination driveway.I believe the alignment of the belt was right. Maybe the bearing was asimply a bad one? Maybe it could not withstand the pressure of the new belt tensioner? Belt tensioner is a Gates product so should be good.Am ready to do it again, but wonder if there's an underlying problem.... maybe the crankshaft balancer?Alignment of the belt had looked good. Current belt is about 1 year 15kmiles old, did not replace. Now, the edge is frayed, so will get a new belt (Good year or Gates or Gator..... does gates = gator? All three mounitng bolts are tight... what would cause the relacement pump to fail? What should I look for? \015 Posted / edited by AnonymousUser on : 19-10-2020

Answers :

This unfortunetly just sounds like one of those cases when a new part was just bad in the first place. It does happen, they are still put together by humans- I belive if you put another on, it will most likley last. From what I've read, it sound like you were carefull and dilligant in your work, and dbl checking after finished.
