The best thing to do is have a diagnostic scan ran on this. It does save time and goes right to problem.
This could be caused by a few different things. In 10 years of mechanic work, I have seen bad injectors do this, plugged fuel filter, bad egr valves can cause this, bad 02 sensors, coil packs can do this, but you normally would have an erratic idle to begin with.
I would replace the fuel filter, especially if it hasn't been replaced for awhile, if it's clogged it will cut down on the fuel pressure and make the truck run lean. Are you getting a check engine light on? I would check the transmission fluid level, smell and color. And also the air filter.
