Having problems with your 1999 Buick LeSabre ?

How do you know if your alternator is going out?

I am not an expert, and its been a few years since I had to fiddle with one, but typically a voltmeter is put on the output of the alternator and if its putting out less than 13 volts its usually bad, it should be putting out about 13.5 volts to be charging the battery properly. If its the original alternator, but a new battery, then most likely it is bad, they last around 10-15 years. Most folks bite the bullet, go to the auto store, replace it and cross your fingers it does it. But before you do, make sure your battery is good, you have no corrosion on it or the cables, both on the battery side and the connectors for the alternator and the grounds, both frame and electronics side. Hope that helps. I am a phone "nerd", but have bought and sold over 25 cars in my life since my 69' Camaro at 15.
