Having problems with your Chevrolet Cavalier ?

I followed a link to ask you about a 2004 chevrolet cavalier that has an automatic transmission issue. I saw that you had tried to answer the same question for someone else. It will not shift from frist to second gear and the speedometer is no longer working. When in drive it slips into a neutral (between gears I think) like state and the motor revs. Any ideas what I should check. It is my Mothers car and she (and I) can not afford a costly repair bill. Thank you very much, Darrel Clark
