Having problems with your Chevrolet El Camino ?

I think I need to replace my brake booster.

\015 I think I need to replace my dual bag brake booster on my 1980 El Camino. I have a new master cylinder and new brakes all the way around and the back brakes were adjusted manually so that they gently grab the drum. Also replaced a wheel cylinder and bleed all four lines, twice. Also did a gravity feed to all lines while open. The brakes still go nearly to the floor before I get any braking. I pulled the vacuum hose on the power booster and that gave me very stiff brakes, which usually means the booster is ok. Right? Am I missing something? The vehicle stops straight. As is, the brakes will lock up If I need them to.-Confused\015 Posted / edited by AnonymousUser on : 21-01-2019

Answers :

Did you bench bleed the master before you installed it???? Engine off, have someone push the brake petal down and hold it down while you crack the brake line loose at the master, then tighten it and let up on the petal.Do this several times for each of the 2 lines at the master, only cracking it when the petal is being held all the way down.Repeat...Do them separately.Have some rags below the master to mop up the mess and keep the master from running out of fluid. Then do the gravity bleed one more time on each wheel cyl. and watch for a bubble of 2.
\015\012I hope this helps you.
\015\012Yes the booster sounds fine.
I have a 1980 el camino with the exact same problem, I replaced the master cylinder with a new one and all the brakes and both wheel cylinders, bleed the brake system including master cylinder my brake got stiff with the engine off and I turned the engine on, my brake pedal went to the floor as before, I did some research and talk to the people at autozone and found out that it was the power brake booster, it works on vacuum and has a diaphragm, either a single or a double,I have to take it off to match it, cost is around 88.99 for a single and 97.99 for a double at autozone maybe you can find a cheaper one on line, I this some help to you.
