What is the proper postion of the thermostat in a 1996 dodge avenger> Does it matter in which position the thermostat is postioned

Yes it matters. The bleed valve must piont straight up. If it is not in the correct position, the cooling system will get an air pocket and cause overheating. (See diagram)dttech_19.gif
Make sure to align the new stat the same as the one being replaced.

DO NOT INSTALL THE THERMOSTAT BACKWARDS!

Make sure you put the end with the coil spring into the engine. Also, make sure the small air bleed hole in the round flange goes to the top.
