The 318 is a workhorse of an engine ...nearly as good as the old 283 chevy. Though the more precise control offered by computer systems does offer generally better performance, but if they can't make a million dollar computer in a spacecraft work properly, what can we expect from a mass produced bunch of electronics we get in our cars? Likely the computer isn't well grounded or a body control module is malfunctioning. Fuel mileage problem can be tested with a digital multimeter using instructions in an inexpensive manual such as haynes or chiltons. I'd begin by testing temp sender, MAP, and manifold air temp senders, then going to the tps, then other control sensors. Injectors can wear out...fuel flowing through them increases the nozzle size gradually and deposits form on the ends which can mess with the spray pattern.
other than replacing them, there is no real test other than a home-made pump unit I saw being used by a tech at a volvo dealer a few years back
(would be nice if he patented it) You cannot really disconnect the computer only because likely it will not pass inspection if you do, and if disconnected the only option would be going back to a carburetor and earlier ignition system but you'd need to go to one that is pre-lean burn or you will just be changing to another poorly designed system.
Do some testing and see what you come up with!!
Good luck!
Sounds like Body control module failure(BCM) have scanned for codes
