Answers :

Do not touch the fuel and play with it as you could do more harm than good ,the popping down the exhaust is caused by a air leak in the exhaust system as this is the most common cause ,but as this vehicle is so old it was was not designed to run on unleaded fuel and i suspect that the valves are not stelite coated so they have burnt seats caused by lack of lead in the fuel which was a lubricant for the valve seats as well .Now you havent stated what year this vehicle is but they havent fitted SU carbs for the last 25yrs at least so this later one is more of my suspicion and if iam right then use a substitute lead additive in the fuel after you have removed the heads and ground the valves in .
