Having problems with your Mazda MAZDA3 ?

My wife's 2000 Mazda Demio 5HBa 1.3 auto has done about 140000k. It recently developed a problem with changing gear, very rough, 'jerky'. We had it serviced by a trransmission specialist, fresh oil and lubeguard additive. However, after about 300k the problem seems worse, as if it is not changing gear, with the "hold" light flickering on and off. What should we do?

Answers :

That light flickers when the control electronics of the gearbox detects a fault - a part inside it is failing. The car must be connected to a diagnostic machine , the error codes read and the failing part identified. To replace it the gearbox must be taken off the car and dismantled - a big , expensive job that the mechanic has tried to avoid by replacing the oil. Unfortunately the part is too gone for that so be prepared for a hefty bill.
