Having problems with your Oldsmobile 98 ?

I have an Olds 98 with a 3.8 L engine. It was running and the engine died before I could turn out of the drive way. I changed the plugs and plug wires and it started but will not stay running. Any suggestions?

Plugs and plug wires are the last thing that would cause this problem, the 1st thing we do in the shop for a problem like this is run a electronic engine control test, this will run the engine through it's idle speed control paces and also the key on engine off test will return any trouble codes that may explain what the problem area is in the engine controls, as you have already found out guessing is not a good way to approach this problem, it wastes money and your valuable time, not to mention the frustration of doing th work and having nothing change, here is my suggestion clean the throttle valve and the Idle speed control valve, here is how you do that, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

If this doesn't cure the problem you will need to have a shop run a full system diagnostic with a scanner, the two test that need to be run are key on engine off and key on engine running
