Having problems with your Toyota 4Runner ?

My son is towing a 6x12' trailer with a 2004 toyota 4runner and he has gone about 500 miles and now the truck is starting to overheat. I replace the radiator, fan clutch, and thermostat beofrre he left but NOT the water pump. Is there a quick test he can run to determine what is not working. If it is the pump how hard are they tto change or what would be a going rate to change the pump?

I would tell him to check the coolant first. Slowly remove the cap, start the car, and check the level with the heat on full blast! Have him note whether there appears to be any contaminants in the water/coolant such as oil. If nothing "appears" to wrong add some more coolant until full. He can try running with the heat on full and see if that helps drop the temperature. If it does, it may be too much of a load and too small of a trans cooler. Let me know what he sees. I will be here for a while and happy to help!
